Head of Service

The role of waste collection and disposal in a County Council is paramount to the proper functioning of that Authority. As landfill charges increase and government funding decreases, the role of a Waste Management department and its Head of Service is pivotal in ensuring that the services delivered are efficient and cost effective. Our client is one of the best performing authorities in the sector and is committed to innovation and to achieving an ambitious target of 60% for recycling and composting. With a recent restructuring of the team and a need to fill two roles in the department, there was a need for a concerted approach in order to bring on suitably skilled individuals.

Recruiting to two positions simultaneously can often be tricky especially if they are within the same team. Alpine Executive was asked to assist with the recruitment of the more senior of the two roles. The Head of Waste would need to have responsibility for leading strategically and for engaging with partners and Members under a commissioning structure.

For Alpine Executive, it was important to be able to demonstrate a strong understanding of the market and some of the challenges it is facing. Having a good grip of the key technical requirements of the post and opening this up to the commercial market was imperative during the search

The interest that Alpine Executive generated in the post resulted in a significantly higher number of applications than was anticipated but more importantly, our search activities produced a high quality list which the client was confident would produce a strong shortlist of ‘appointable' candidates from which they could choose.

Our client was delighted with the input from Alpine Executive which resulted in a number of suitable candidates also being identified for the more junior role too. The overall outcome was the appointment of two high quality individuals.
