Our client is sponsored by Government Department and the Welsh Assembly Government. They also work closely with the Department for Energy and Climate Change and the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform. Their aims are to protect and improve the environment and to promote sustainable development across England and Wales. Employing around 13,000 staff in Head Office, Regions and Areas, they play a central role in delivering the environmental priorities of central government and the Welsh Assembly Government through their role as

• an environmental regulator
• an environmental operator, and
• an adviser to government on the development of environmental policy and on flooding issues
• a promoter of scientific research in support of these roles

The client's Head Office is responsible for setting strategic direction, policy and standards to ensure a consistent national approach and plays a major role in performance monitoring and financial control.

Due to the retirement of one Board member, a replacement was sought by our client; someone with the ability to lead the directorate through an exciting and yet politically uncertain and challenging time ahead.

Our client has worked in partnership with industry, raising awareness and improving environmental practices.  They were seeking someone with a good understanding of the regulatory process but also someone who could empathise with the pressure that industry was facing and could engage effectively with the sector.
